Description

CANINE REHAB THERAPIST: Lisa Dos Passos, OT, Vet Tech, CCRP (Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner)

FOCUS ON FUNCTION & PERFORMANCE FOR CANINE ATHLETES, SENIORS, & PETS WITH DISABILITIES

I offer a variety of consultation services for pet owners with athletic pets, as well as retired or senior pets. I also serve families and rescue organizations with pets who have physical challenges such as paralysis or amputations.  I work with trainers and handlers of canine athletes as well as veterinary professionals who are interested in a second look or a consult on a case.  I provide consults for:

  • Pet parents:
    • Education on massage and range of motion for specific injuries or conditions.
    • Home exercise programs, including using house-hold items for exercises and activities.
    • Ideas for setting up the home for safety for pets recovering from injury, surgery or for aging pets.
  • Trainers and Handlers:
    • Education for trainers and handlers, to help optimize safety with equipment and training surfaces.
    • Handling recommendations to improve safety and performance.
    • Targeted exercises or training cues to improve performance and safety in various sports.
    • Teaching ways to modify courses, sports, for senior athletes.
  • General and Rehabilitation Practitioners:
    • Consultation and collaborative problem solving for various injuries or conditions.
    • Collaboration and coaching on ways to incorporate rehab concepts into general practice, such as weight management and senior mobility issues.
    • Consultation and problem solving for rescue groups with injured or physically challenged pets in their care.
    Why Choose Me?
As an Occupational Therapist who is also certified as a Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner, I look at the whole picture. How is your dog moving? Where are the issues? How can your dog be helped to move better, more comfortably, and with less effort? What is your dog's "job"? Are there devices that can help him/her do their "job" better? I look at the injury, how mobility can be improved, and how the injury can be prevented in the future. I specialize in canine athletes as well as senior pets and pets with physical challenges such as paralysis or amputations. I strive to make pets more functional and comfortable in their home, their environment, and while performing their job, be it an athlete or a couch potato.
    Information I Require

If contacting me for help with a pet following injury or illness, I will need the following information before the consult:

    About Me

Lisa is a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) through the University of Tennessee.  In her work with canines, Lisa merges her training as a CCRP and as an Occupational Therapist (OT) along with her many years as a Vet Tech. Many of her four-legged patients are canine athletes, competing in agility, disc, flyball, and other sports.

Lisa's OT background also helps Lisa focus on function and comfort when working with dogs with physical impairments, including limb amputations and spinal injuries.  Lisa has a special place in her heart for senior pets where she uses manual therapies to help improve mobility and teaches owners how to carry over various exercises, movements, and massage techniques on their pets so that they can follow-up at home.

Lisa has played flyball for over 16 years, and has loved and cared for many of her own canine athletes and couch potatoes over the years.  "I find that the world of canine rehab has brought together my years of working with children, adults, and seniors, together with my years of working in the veterinary field, and those skills have served me well when working with the dogs that I have served."

    Testimonials
    • Lisa does a terrific job with my anxious, hyper lab! I would definitely recommend her!
    • My 12 1/2 year old comes away from an appointment with Lisa like a pup!  Lisa has magic hands!
